Young Carers Supported by Freemasons
Basingstoke & District Young Carers has received a welcome boost thanks to a £1,000 donation from the Elvetham Masonic Lodge. The charity supports more than 120 local children and young people who provide regular care or emotional support to family members living with illness, disability, mental health conditions, or addiction. Nationally, around 700,000 young people take on these responsibilities, often juggling household tasks, medication support, and childcare alongside schoolwork and the pressures of growing up.
The cheque was presented by Michael Whittaker, Worshipful Master of the 106-year-old Elvetham Lodge, to Colette Bibby, Youth Team Leader for the charity. Young carers attend weekly sessions at The Warren, part of the Hatch Warren Community Centre, where three agegroup clubs offer respite, friendship, and understanding—things many miss out on when their peers cannot relate to the challenges they face at home.
Colette Bibby expressed her appreciation for the support, saying the donation will help subsidise a packed programme of summer activities and fund transport for those who would otherwise struggle to attend. “It ensures they can be part of our closeknit community and enjoy time with others who understand their experiences,” she said.
This year’s summer programme includes; parties, BBQs, and trips to the Hawk Conservancy, New Forest Wildlife Park, and the Railway Control Room, followed by a train journey to London. Young carers will also enjoy an overnight stay at the Gordon Brown Centre, two nights at Magdalen Farm in Somerset, a canal trip, and visits to Paulton’s Park and Hayling Island.
The autumn term will bring a family Halloween celebration and festive outings, including a pantomime trip and a large Christmas party.
